Howdy! Got my winch operating cable working now, and found another issue. I can operate the winch in all 3 uses; Pull, Hold and Free spool. When I back up to a log and place the winch in free spool, I can pull the mainline cable by hand for a short period of time, then it becomes harder to pull, then stops altogether. I have checked to be sure I have not got a cable bind on the drum, the winch just seems to slowly go in to the Hold position. If I hook up the log, pull forward in the Hold position and then put it back in free spool, the cable will play out. Any ideas what might be causing this? I checked the oil level in the winch, and it is good. Oil looks a little milky, but not bad.
Any suggestions?

Hi,
Well, I never had a 550, much less one with a winch. But....how about a guess?
Is that thing controlled via hydraulics?
Maybe a seeping valve allowing pressure by slowly??

550 winch
Hi and Stan hit it on the head.
it is slowly loosing pressure so brake is coming on.
first thing to check,, is pull off the side cover on side of winch,, left side and check the little hydraulic cylinder that pushes on brake band to release brake.. there is a little $10 o-ring in there that is the main seal. just run your finger along the bottom of it.. if you have oil on your finger it is leaking..
It can also be the control valve but check the brake cylinder first..
also there is a pipe plug on top of winch straight back from control valve,, on left side,, pull plug and put in a gauge.. winch should read 850lbs at idle and 1050lbs. psi at 1900rpm.
You can run this winch with the side cover removed,, so if some one activates the winch from free spool to brake several times you can watch and see what is happening..
check this out first and let us know before we start on the valve.. good luck Mark.
