JD 450 loader (newbie)

Post by sspony » Sun Nov 22, 2015 8:55 am

Hello all! I'm new to the site and new to heavy equipment as well. I've turned a wrench a quite a few cars and trucks but never something like what I just purchased. Which is my first question, what did I just purchase? It's a JD 450 loader with cab and backhoe attachment mounted on a slide rail. From what I've read I believe. It's a 70's model grey (European) market machine. The tag on the dash says "made in France". I purchased the loader to do some work around our farm. Dig ditches, clear brush, clear trees, cut some old logging roads back out etc. However before I begin I want to go through the machine and freshin everything up to be sure it has it's best chance at success. So far I've only noticed a few problems. 1: the right track is a little loose. 2: It won't change gears without turning the engine off. However the clutch works fine otherwise and it functions great once you put it in a gear. 3: loader pins have a little slop. Anyway I'm planning on ordering a service Manual today. Any other tips/thoughts/pointers? Thanks
I'll post some pictures shortly. [/img]

Hi,

You have something where most of it bears little resemblance to cars and maybe a bit more to trucks as long as they had mechanically injected diesel engines.

Once you get back past the engine, it is all quite different. But, once you take a nice sit-down with the technical manual it will begin making sense to you. If you didn't also get one, the parts catalog is also a must-have. Lots of nice exploded-view diagrams in there really help.

Sounds like you have some adjustment issues right off the bat. So, if it were me, I would wait until I had taken some time with the manual before using the machine.

One place you can go do some reading right away is the undercarriage. Crawler Loaders are a bit tough on the u/c and adding a backhoe tends to make that worse. There are a lot of bits which make up a u/c, and everything wears on everything. But here is a link to a PDF that explains it all quite well:

Thanks Stan! So far I have only run the loader to test and load/unload from the trailer. I plan to go through the machine before working it at all. Is there a particular manual/parts catalog you recommend?
I had a friend that knows equipment look at loader with me and he thought the uc was in decent shape. Pins might need to be turned at some point (in 1k hours was his guess).

You'll want to go here for the service manual
http://www.johndeeretechinfo.com/

Go here and search and it will take you to the parts catalog download page

Hi: The parts manual is free - handy. Ben's link will take you to this page. Type in 450, and look down the left side for the manual you need. I think it will be #927. Good luck with your new purchase. Paul

Sorry, my mistake. I've corrected this post. Thanks JT. Paul

Hi,

From my list over in the FAQ:

JD450

OM T32592
SM 2064
PC 922 (Crawler)
PC 927 (Crawler Loader)

JD450B

OM T40817
TM 1033
PC 1170

I am thinking that is a JD450 but might be a JD450B, so copied both sets of manual numbers. I would start with the older manual first and then move to the later one if too many details are not matching up.

What I don't have are any listings for machines made outside of Dubuque. Such as from Saran or Mannheim. But, they pretty closely follow what came out of Dubuque except for accessory items. Like your side boxes are a bit different.

Great information, thanks guys! I'll open those link up on my computer when I get home.

What makes you think its a 450B and not a 450 or a 450A? I'm curious to find out what it is exactly. Also, what do you all do with your crawlers to prepare them for the cold?

Hi,

My stuff lives under a shed roof built alongside my workshop. This is much better than letting them sit outside. The crawler sits on boards. Otherwise, it might well freeze the pads to the ground, and might not be moveable.

When I was in NY and had that JD350 Diesel with its two batteries, I kept a maintainer on it all winter. But, not in summer. They are a really good idea. Takes lots of amps to crank a Diesel in winter. And, just when the battery chemistry doesn't want to work....

As far a your machine goes, I think it is a JD450. Not a JD450B. But I have been fooled by looking at photos before. I never had any version of 450, so do not have the experience with them to look at a photo and clue in on some little detail and just know for sure.

And, there never was a JD450A. They went from no letter to 'B'. We also refer to the JD450 as a 'straight 450'.

Like Stan, I keep my crawler on boards so the tracks don't freeze to the ground. I also make sure that the antifreeze mix is up to snuff and that there is no water in my oils - nothing coffee colored, since sometimes the water will freeze in the pumps and cause damage. I don't keep mine on a charger, but I do have the luxury of parking near an outlet. I keep mine under a loose fitting tarp so that snow removal is quicker and easier. This also keeps the machine drier in general which is good for the clutches, and in my case, the distributor which doesn't like to get wet. I also am very careful to dig out/clean the tracks daily when it gets cold. Frozen dirt can keeps the top idlers from spinning as they should and flats will become apparent. Frozen dirt also keeps the track tensioners from working as they should. One last thing, I put a #10 can over my exhaust pipe to keep water, snow and critters out of my engine. Hope this helps. Paul
BTW, nice looking machine sounds like with some TLC, it will serve you well.

Thanks Stan/Paul. It will be kept in the barn this winter so that should protect it will from the elements. However I may still put it on boards and will certainly keep a can on the exhaust.

The po left all kinds of dirt in the track so I'm going to do my best to pressure wash that out before running it much.

After fluids/filters I will prob try to slowly bring it back up to par as I work it. The cab needs a lot of attention as well as a few other items. It's a great machine and I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do.

Also I'm not seeing the "free" operators manual.

Also how about the sloppy pins for the loader. Buy new, keep running these, or have a local machine shop turn some new ones?
