another question on 450

Post by altonlee » Sat Dec 12, 2015 10:37 am

My 450 c builds up pressure in the final drives. You can run it a bit and take the fill plug out and there is built up pressure.

Should there not be a vent tube that is stopped up and I just can't find it?

Thanks

Alton

I think, if memory serves me here, the vent is in the filler cap on the transmission on the 450 C's. They were a little bad for stopping up and not letting the the case breath.

Is the pressure build up in the final drives? or the steering clutches? Bruce

Its in the final drives, when I take the fill plug, just above the tracks, there is pressure. Been raining here so have not looked for the vennt on the filler tube.

Thanks

?The plug that takes a 3/4 square drive to remove above the tracks? The fill and drain plugs for the final drives are under the crawler. The plug above the track is the steering clutch housing. Im not aware of a vent. The steering housing can be seperate from the transmission or they can have a common sump. I do not know the break in SN when this happened. Some have been converted internally to common sumps (this is outlined in the service manual). If your crawler's steering clutch housing is the older or unconverted style, you could have a hydraulic hose leak or seal leak in the steering housing. This fluid moving from the transmission housing to the steering housing could explain a build up in air pressure and eventually an over-full case of oil. Normally, I believe there is 3 Gal in each steering clutch housing(the older one without the common sump). This would require very close monitoring of fluid levels during use, to see if there is a shift.
