HELP ! to identify a crawler series

Post by cantbeatadeere » Fri Feb 12, 2016 7:39 pm

My brother in law picked up a 350C ---well, I'm no expert and we are trying to determine if is in fact a C or B or....???? If anyone could tell by blade type, filter locations ect.... that would be great. the batt side compartment must have been replaced due to the serial number is that of a 450 crawler?

look at the steering clutch housing if the cover is square and only has 4 bolts in it then it is NOT a C wet (it is a straight or B dry ) .....C has like 10 bolts and a pipe plug and is more of a rectangle

Perfect...one other thing, this dozer has an external (spin on) hyd. filter in the right hand compartment, on my 350c the hyd. filter is inside the hyd. fluid reservoir. ---any ideas??

350C?

A couple of quick ways to Identify the "C" model...

1. look under the seat,, a c model will have the steering clutch levers going to a small hydraulic spool valve and as you pull the levers you will see the chrome spools,,, no such thing on the straight 350 or 350B.. its all mechanical...

2. the "C" models had the 3-152 engine and the newer ones had the 3-164 engine but be careful as B model's had the 3-152 motor as well..

3. when looking to buy and only able to observe pictures to determine what the machine is, try to get under the seat pictures as the spool valve is definitive for sure,, but sometimes for whatever reason seller won't co-operate look closely at the final drive pictures,, from the outside you can see a bunch of extra bolts that hold the brake anchor for the C models.. and the straight 350 and 350B only have the larger bolts along the perimeter of the case..

A dozer for sale with 350C decals and is a pipe layer model,, I recommended to a friend of mine as this type of dozer has never really worked as far as engine, tranny, reverser and final drives is concerned...
turns out I could see from the finals it is a straight 350 and the engine tag is the older 43T type engine,,, so whole machine is misrepresented...

and as JT said ... it all adds up..

as far as the filter in the hydraulic compartment, with a screw on element, that is fairly common on C models and a nice option... Mark

B vs C Final Drives

Post by JWB Contracting » Sat Feb 13, 2016 9:03 pm

I've gotten a little smarter on identifying C vs older model crawlers by looking at the upper mounting portion of the final drive. I often buy equipment by picture and never trust the model to be as advertised. Most machines have been repainted at some point in time and often get C series decals, whether as a mistake or on purpose. Very tough to look under the seat from a picture.

Same technique can be used on 450's.

I always point out the differences between wet and dry clutches when selling someone there first Deere.

Spin on hydraulic filters did not come out until mid C model production, not to say someone could not have taken a tank off of a C and put it on something else though
