A previous owner of my straight 450 changed out the transmission cooler lines from steel to rubber, the rubber is cracking and I want to replace it, but noticed that the top elbow coming out of the casing goes to the bottom of the spin on filter in the grill, and my manual shows it going from the bottom elbow to the base of the filter, obviously one is a supply and one is a return, so my question is does it matter whether or not the top or bottom outlet goes to the base of the filter?

YES you want the pressure to go to the outer part of the filter and return out the center of filter

So it should be the bottom outlet to the bottom of the filter then?
