350B engine overhaul

Post by eidolon » Wed Apr 13, 2016 6:46 am

I am getting a lot of blow by and smoke from my 152 diesel engine on my crawler and it generally runs rough without the power it should have. Yes, I have adjusted valves and replaced injectors. I have been wondering about doing an in-frame rebuild or maybe getting a new short block. Any thoughts out there on these options from those of you experienced in such things? Is the 152 a common engine for other equipment? How difficult is an in-frame overhaul? Looks easy enough at first, but wondering if there are pitfalls with that approach. The old dozer has not had the kind of maintenance it should have during its life, but nothing appears to be broken or permanently disfigured on it, so may be worth the investment - esp since it is a winch equipped model with 6 way - very popular among the timber gathering crowd around here.
