450C steering is not tight
I have a 450C (and yes, its a 450C according to SN). It has a hard time turning, meaning it turns, but I have to make very wide turns. If I push against an immovable object, both tracks turn. If i pull the either lever, that side of the track will stop and other side will keep spinning. I noticed that my brake pedal does not work at all. Does the brake pedal have anything to do with this? I dont have a service manual, but one is on order. Thanks!

Hi,
You are describing turns with disengaged clutches only - no brakes. You are supposed to disengage the clutch and then engage that side brake with each stick.
Then, they steer quickly. Without the brake, it will turn, but slowly and in a wide circle.
Both brakes are supposed to engage when you step on the brake pedal. You aren't getting this, either.
Probably out of adjustment, but may also be worse then that. But, the first thing is to perform the clutch and brake adjustments. And for that you will need the Technical Manual.
If it is worse than that, now you get into a bit of work to fix it all. Then, you probably need the Parts Catalog as well.

The primary question is can you lock up one track and spin in circle? If not, brakes as Stan said.

If you do not have a service manual, now is the time I would suggest getting one. Too many dollars at risk to run the chance of doing something incorrectly.

Hi,
There are adjustments for each brake for each steering lever, then more adjustments for the brake pedal to engage both brakes at the same time.
Details vary by machine (as in 350 is different from 450) and then by series (as in Straight and B are different than C). This is when you must have the correct technical manual for the machine you have.
Sometimes things are split by serial number within a series as well. So, the manuals will tell you what to do for that case as well.
Not having, or had, a 450C, I can't tell you more than the basics which apply to pretty much all of the Deere crawlers: You have to get the clutch to brake adjustment done properly for each side, then deal with the brake pedal.
And you need the TM to do that.

Not sure if this applies to your 450, but on my 350B you have to follow the adjustment procedure from start to finish to gain the correct results. Its tempting to use the manual to determine which nut turns the brake adjuster, but that really does solve the matter of how to adjust them properly. Try starting from the beginning and following the procedure all the way thru and see if you get any different results, hopefully you will..
Good Luck,
Jason

450C brakes
Stx,, it is uncommon for both brakes to go at once on the 450c wet clutch-brake system... I can't help but wonder if there is a mechanical linkage unhooked under the floor pan...or under the seat,, also by clutch housing.. if you could get some one to help you.. have one person slowly push the brake pedal while you watch under the seat to actually see the hydraulic pistons move,, just a thought...
if they move to full extent on to next possibility.. there is a big pipe plug on the sprocket side of the clutch-brake housing.. remove the plug... the C models are supposed to have an automatic brake adjuster so when you back up and brake the adjuster takes up the slack.. sometimes these stick and won.t take up the slack..
they are like the old brake adjusters on cars with a spring and sometimes the spring breaks.. reach in there with a brake tool or even a screw driver and you can turn that adjuster.. a cogged wheel about 1 1/2"s diameter with a coil spring up against it .. you will feel the cogs as they click..a few notches at a time... it would probably take quite a few as you have no brake... if that doesn't take up the slack and the mechanical part is working then you probably need brake bands.. best of luck Mark
