Tach gear replacement
Tach gear replacement
Is it possible to remove the tach gear from the end of the camshaft on one motor and install it in another?
Or is it pressed in and impossible to get out?
I have tried so I know it will not come out easy.
Thanks, Ted

Looking at the one I was going to install it in there aren't any threads. So I'm pretty sure it is pressed in some how.
What I was kinda looking for is if anyone had been able to remove one successfully.
I tried locking on to it with vise grips and tapping it with a hammer but I didn't want to go to hard if it is just not going to come out.
Thanks

on my 450C the gear was bad and instead of tearing it down to replace the gear a simpler (cheaper) solution was to adjust throttle cable so that max throttle position is at 2000 rpm(or 1800 if you're more comfortable with that). You can rent a digital tack and using whiteout or chalk to make a reference mark on the front lower pulley you can get an accurate reading during set-up.
Gear appears to be a press fit:in a few hours I'll be at office and see if my manuals have a better description and let you know what I find.

camshaft gear
Ted, I recently rebuilt my 450c motor but the kit did not include the tach gear..
the gear is press fit onto the camshaft but is also splined... I tried everything,,, I have good OTC bearing pullers.. we put one on and put it in a press and could not get out the gear.. I then heated camshaft end red hot as I had a new cam anyway and still could not get it out.. I ended up slicing end of cam with torch to get gear out,,,,,,,,
only to find the new cam did not have that splined end.. so no tach...
I hope you have better luck then I did... Mark.

If having a functioning tach is your only concern there are some other options. Check out Tiny Tach online. It is a digital unit that senses fuel pressure pulses in one of your injector lines and creates a tach signal. Around $200.00 and non invasive. There are some other electric diesel tach options available as well.
