350B injection pump

Post by dustin502 » Fri Sep 16, 2016 10:26 am

Looking for some advice, My 350b will only start with a shot of starting fluid. I'm getting fuel to the injector pump but nothing out. I can feel and hear the fuel shutoff working. I took the top off the pump and didn't see any problems.

Maybe it's the check valve on the pump that connects to the return line. It screws directly into the pump and goes to the line/ hose that connects to all the injectors, then keeps going back to the fuel tank. Disconnect the hose that leads to the injectors, then remove the valve from the pump. At the end of the valve that goes into the pump is a tiny clear ball that controls the flow of fuel. The over pumped fuel, at the pump, pushes the ball to open the path for excess fuel to go back to the tank. The ball won't allow fuel to go in the direction back to the pump. If you look thru the fitting, you should be able to see thru it because the ball is clear plastic. You can gently press on the ball and it should move inwards into the fitting. You should be able to blow thru the fitting from the ball end but, not from the other end. Real easy to check it out but may have nothing to do with your problem. When I had a faulty check valve, the engine would start but, quit in just a few seconds.

Need a little more information. When you shoot it with starting fluid and it does start, does it run normally at a higher RPM level?

Was it always like this or did this just, "excuse the pun" start?

Have you checked the injector pump timing, has it changed?

It may not even be related to the injector pump, you may have weak compression.

The dozer was running fine about 2 months ago when I parked it. It does seem to run a little higher rpm with the starting fluid but it really depends on how much I spray in it. I didn't check the pump timing because it does run with starting fluid. I'm getting fuel to the injection pump but nothing out of it. I'll look at the check valve tomorrow

I don't think it would be a pump timing problem if it ran ok when it was parked. Even if the pump timing is wrong, it would still run on the starting fluid because the fluid doesn't go thru the pump. I think there should be a timing/inspection window on the side of the pump which can be removed with a couple screws. If there is dark matter in there, it's a sign that the ring is deteriorating and the pump is failing. If the pump is tired, the injectors won't get enough pressure to open. I think they require about 3200psi to open.

I just took the inspection cover off the side and didn't see anything other than clean fuel. Does JD offer a rebuild kit for these pumps?

I don't think JD offeres a rebuild kit but, I think I saw them on Ebay or Amazon. I'm assuming it's a Stanadyne JDB-2797.

if you got nice clean fluid out of the inspection window, I would double check all the basics again.....could be a gummed up stuck or bad fuel shutoff solenoid...... I always try to eliminate everything first then commit to removing the pump for service.

When you say you're not getting fuel out of the pump, do you mean out of the injectors or did you remove the fuel lines from the injectors and check there?

You can get IP parts from US Diesel. 817-485-6422, that is where I got the parts to rebuild mine. www.usdiesel.com

Just checking to see if you are making any headway on your pump.

They are not too hard to rebuild yourself if you are at all mechanically inclined, the rebuild kit is only about $30 and the only special tool you need is a torx T45 (I think, close to it anyway). If you search around on the web you can find a copy of the manual which basically goes through it step by step.
