350 screaching noise in reverse

Post by bomber » Tue Sep 20, 2016 4:32 pm

I have a straight 350 loader (reverser) that has developed a metal on metal screech only in reverse. The noise is speed dependent, not RPM and seems to be coming from the rear.
There is no noise in any forward speed, it is most noticeable in first gear, less in second and third.
Any guesses on what I need to look at?

Countershaft bearing fail would be my guess.

Is the countershaft in the reverser?
This noise is coming from the very back of the loader.

I'm sorry, read "reverser" and thought that is where the noise is. Look at the sprockets and see if they are hitting against the rear roller. If so, final drive bearings are out. Or even if not hitting, bearings could still be out. Try and pry on the sprocket with a large bar and see if you get any movement.

The verdict is in, bad barring in the transmission. Had them all replaced ($3300).
Almost doubled the cost of the loader.
