Straight 450 loader steering

Post by JD450tl » Tue Nov 08, 2016 5:57 pm

What sort of oil does he power assist system for the steering use? Also, where could I get rebuild kits for those cylinders under the seat?

I would say hydraulic oil (303) and probably you can get rebuild kits. I know they're available for my 350B and they may be the same kits for your 450. Why are you going to rebuild the cylinders? If they aren't assisting and aren't leaking, it may be the splitter valve which is where the fluid is distributed to the right or left cylinder. This valve can get clogged so that the fluid isn't released to the cylinders. I just had that happen but, it was only affecting my right turn cylinder.

Thanks for the info. They're leaking is the main reason, and to hopefully make it easier to steer. It's got newer steering clutches in it. We just had the motor rebuilt top to bottom, and are trying to fix some things as we go. Already rebuilt the alternator, new water pump, re-cored the radiator and replaced a bunch of lines and hoses. Seemed appropriate to help the steering out while we're at it.

Sounds like you're going to end up with a nice machine. As long as you're going to have the steering cylinders off to rebuild them, you should pop the splitter valve off and be sure it's clean. With the cylinders off there will be 4 bolts holding the cylinder mounting bracket to remove and the hydraulic line supplying fluid to the spitter also. Then just pop off a snap ring and slide the splitter plunger out. Mine was contaminated with flakes of something blocking the right line going to the cylinder. This procedure I described, may be a bit different on your 450 than on may 350B but, yours should at least be similar. With mine now working as it should, I can literally steer it either way with one finger.
