JD 550 Crawler Tranmission

Post by LewM » Mon Nov 14, 2016 2:10 pm

I have a JD 550 that I'm fixing up and it works really well except, when I'm working on steep grades. The forward and reverse seems to disengage. Reverse is worse but it happen in forward sometimes also. It's almost like it runs out of transmission fluid. The fluid seams to be correct when on level ground. The tractor pulls really well, spins the tracks in forward and reverse.
My question is should I add fluid to see if that helps? I know these dozers are notorious for transmission i.e. clutch problems, is this one of the symptoms of rebuild ahead?
Any help appreciated!

Lew, any update? I have the same thing going on with my 550. Slips on hills....level ground seems okay.

my 450c will do that if it is a bit low on fluid. I discovered it pushing a burning brush pile into a hole. Lucky I had a 350 with a winch on hand or it would have burned.
450`s c-dozer 6 way, b-loader.
350`s c-loader + ripper, b-loader with winch arch. B-loader with dozer pads
backhoe attachment.
1010 loader with forks for round bales
a few 610 Bobcats. many attachments

Hi,

It is always a good idea to have another on hand to pull the first one out with!

Back when I was a kid, and we were running our dealership, we had a customer who dug ponds. He had four crawlers. Two on the job site, one back at his shop and one in ours being drained of pond scum....
