My John Deere 550 dozer (1982 model) works fine until it gets warm or works hard. It then starts to slow down (lose pushing power) and, finally, will not move. After it sits a few minutes, it will run again. It has new steering clutches and brakes. I have been told by several knowledgeable people that this is classic slippage of the friction clutches in the transmission and that this is a big deal problem. I have also been told by one expert that it is possible to change the clutches from the top and that it is not such a big deal after all. Here are my questions:
1) Is it sure enough that this is the problem that I should begin teardown, or are there other things to check first,
2) Can anyone confirm that it is possible and reasonable to replace the clutches without breaking the machine in two?
Thanks for ant advice that you might offer.
