Straight 450 loader repower

I have a 1966 straight 450 loadèr. I love it, use it all the time. When I can keep it running. Unfortunately my engine is tired, and it had a worn slap out CB injection pump. I can modify the engine with parts to use a DB pump, but that will cost $1000-1500. The engine is also sorely in need of a complete rebuild. Add another grand or two. Good running takeouts are about $2,500 and up around me.

So here is my question, anyone with any experience repowering one of these machines with a Cummins? I have access to basically a limitless supply of low hour Cummins B3.3 4 cylinder diesels. The one I have now is real nice, 85hp 219ftlbs of torque. Size wise I know it will fit. I just have to figure out the mounting brackets, and be able to make it bolt to the original transmission and transmit the power reliably.

Anyone ever seen this done or have suggestions? The old engine has to come out anyway, so I will do my reverse engineering to see if it is possible at that time.

Whatever I find I will post up, and if it seems like a good plan I will do a thread on the install to document.

I think your going to have too much power, you should be sticking to the similar 65hp that the stock engine has. A non turbo 3.9L would be better,

You will have a lot of engineering to do including clutch, bell housing, radiator and hydraulic pump drive.

You will be better off finding a good running 4219 or 4239 replacement engine. Should be lots out there. We put a 4239 in our 450C yard loader and starts excellent. I tease my dad that he is saving 20 a month on either - it is cold up here for 5-6 months a year.

I have to agree with the "too much power" statement. Saving money up front might be great, but in the long run the rest of the dozer may suffer the price.

Dozers and loaders are not in short supply, so as they say nothing ventured nothing gained.
