JD350 Crawler engine turning method

Post by wagonerkl » Fri Jun 16, 2017 11:50 pm

I need to pull the injector pump on my crawler. The manual says,"Bar the engine in direction of rotation until the timing line on the governor...registers with the timing line on the cam."

So, I am assuming the term "Bar" means to turn the engine but how do you turn it? On a car, I get a socket on the harmonic balancer nut to turn the engine, but the JD doesn't seem to have a good place to get a hold of anything. Also, it seems like it takes two people even if I could figure out how to turn the engine because you need to see the index mark to know when to stop.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you.

I tried to buy an engine baring tool to go into the the hole were the timing pin goes in but never found one that would fit try a real tight fan belt or a chain wrench on crank pulley with belt removed

Seems like you can get on the flywheel ring gear to turn it over. Maybe remove starter and go thru the hole with a large screwdriver. Go small moves and check for marks aligning. As jsal said, with a tight fan belt, you can grab the fan and turn the engine over. Being diesel, with much higher compression than a gas engine, that fan will pull hard enough to leave a dent in your hand. "NO PAIN-NO GAIN".
