1970 350 crawler shift pattern
seams silly but its been a year since I started her up and asking what the shift pattern is on the machine - im specifically asking for the left to right gear positions - example from the left I have a forward position and a down - am I to understand forward position is- first gear and back - reverse gear? . then when do I use the reverser - I don't have the operators manual only the mechanical manual - I thought there was a JD site for the operators manual but alas couldn't find - so I turn to the forum - thanks in advance

Hi,
If I recall correctly. It has been many years since I had a 350.
R 1 3
2 4
Not all machines were reverser equipped. Plus, the Trans R has greater strength than the Reverser in Reverse. So there are times when you want to leave the Reverser in Forward and use the Trans R instead.
My 68 JD 350 was not reverser equipped and so had only the trans reverse. It was synchronized with second, and so always slipped right from one to the other without hanging up. Nice. Most times I never wished I had a reverser even though Dad's 420c had one which I was used to.
Do not put both the Trans and the Reverser in Reverse to try and get another forward speed.
When the JD 350C came out, the reverse gear in the Trans went away.

Just to clarify, reverse (in the transmission) can be found on 350-C machines. Typically is there when the machine has a winch drive or PTO option. It is to the forward left (directly above 2nd). To use a winch the reverser must be in forward,so if you need to use the winch and travel backwards the reverse gear allows you to do it via the transmisson.
