450-C engine oil
Looking to acquire a 1974 450c crawler loader. The operator manual says to use 30 weight oil and multi-viscosity oil is not recommended. Is it OK to use 15w-40 diesel oil (Rotella, DELO, etc.) and do any forum members use it?

Why don't you want to use the 30? You can get 30 made for diesel.

Another vote for the 15/40 Rotella...never an issue.

All Deere sells for any of their diesels is Plus 50, and that is a 15/40 multigrade.

The manual you are reading is 43 years old or so, run the 15W-40. Oil technology has changed as well as maybe some of the theories on weights.

Hi,
The way one needs to read the weights is that the oil has the cold weather viscosity of a 15w and the hot weather viscosity of a 40w. Used to be, one had to change the oil based on ambient temperature, usually by season. The idea of multigrade is to cover a wider range and not keep chasing the thermometer. Back when they started that, it worked better on paper than it did in reality. These days, it works quite well. But, of course, no one went back and rewrote those manuals....
