Hydraulic filter
Hydraulic filter
Hey guys, would like to change the hydraulic filter on my 450D crawler. Is it simply screw the old one off and screw new one on? Or do I need to bleed pressure after?
I’m attempting to go through most of the dozer, changing fuel filter as well.
Cheers!

Re: Hydraulic filter
No bleeding/venting necessary on the Hydraulic filter. You will need to bleed the new fuel filter:vent is a hex head bleed "bolt" on the top of the fuel filter housing.
Look closely at your hydraulic fluid: if it's at all milky change it.
A complete fluid and filter change on a typical medium dozer is about $700.00 btw.I only use OEM filters and fluids.

Thanks Amos!
The hydraulic filter lies horizontal next to the seat. Any tricks to taking if off without making a mess?

Re: Hydraulic filter
Hey guys, I’m going through changing some of the filters and noticed one in front of radiator. I believe that is for the transmission. Looks to be the same number# filter as the engine oil.
To change the filter in front of the radiator do I need to bleed anything after, or do I just spin it off and spin the new one on? Where do I add transmission fluid after? Or do I even have to?
Appreciate the help guys. A real newbie here who is trying to pick up some general maintenance tips.

Re: Hydraulic filter
Use the dipstick under the seat to check the transmission oil level. You can add oil (Hy-Gard or equivalent) there if needed.
You are just starting on maintenance items to look at. If you don't have manuals you should get at least the operators (OM) to start with as it gives you information on most of the regular maintenance items. The technical (TM) manual would be next. I recommend you get the official John Deere manuals. You can purchase manuals, printed or CD from JD at: https://www.deere.com/en/parts-and-serv ... d-training . Lavoy might be source to check with, as well as eBay sometimes has used manuals. Be sure you get the right manuals for your model, Stan Disbrow has a post in the FAQ section (about the 17th one down the page) listing the manual numbers for different model machines.
You don't have to purchase the parts manual if you are good with looking parts up on line and printing pages as you need them. You can access the 450D parts (PC) manual on line at: http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com. ... ervlet_alt. Put 450D in the Model Search box, or 1891 in the Catalog search Box, and you should find your parts manual.
