450-B Steering clutches swelled up?

Post by vaulter » Wed Jan 24, 2018 1:58 pm

Hello all, this is a great site I have spent hours researching how to get my left steering clutch unstuck. It had been sitting for 6months. I thought they clutch plates had rusted together(and they still might be) and have tried breaking them free by driving it against a immovable rock. But after long hours of research and staring in that access hole, adjusting the clutch and brake, and watching the working side operate I realized the throw out bearing could not move the clutch fork plates because the pressure plate had been pushed back so the forks were in the depressed(released) position and the throw out bearing could not move them any further to release the pressure. I've read that the fiber disks can swell, I believe that is what has happened. I'm going to try to shim the clutch away from the brake drum to allow the throw out bearing to be able to release pressure on the clutch pack. I've loosened one set of bolts and could see that the clutch fork on that arm rose up to were the throw out bearing could move it. Has anyone tried this??? I'll keep you informed how it goes, especially if it works.

Ultimately you are going to have to replace the discs I would say.

Yes, I'm very afraid of that. It's going to be raining here in western was for another 4 months. I have it parked under cover but, I would need my excavator to provide a hoist to get to the clutch and get it out. Trying to avoid that, I don't want to have to work in the rain and leave it torn apart for a couple weeks sitting out side, even if it was tarped. I don't see much of a down side even if the chances are 1/1,000,000 and 4 hours of labor.

IT WORKED!!!!!!
after shimming the clutch it immediately worked and steered. No having to break it free.......nothing. worked better than it ever has!!!! I videoed the process I'll try to upload it and post a link. I wonder how many supposedly rusted tight clutches were actually swelled tight.

Congrats on your repair! What caused the swelling---water, oil? Wondering how that will affect the integrity of the clutch material?

Swelling is moisture related. I would guess it would affect integrity, just don't know to what degree.

Vaulter, nice to hear this quick fix. I have a 450b loader with one stuck steering clutch. I used it for many hours this past summer and it would not loosen. Drove it with one, pain in the a**! I'm looking forward to your final video.

Did you post another video? Where exactly does the shin go? Are you shimming out the pressure plate?
