450C how to bar over engine?

Post by nelstomlinson » Sat Feb 10, 2018 11:30 pm

I'm trying to do an in-frame overhaul on my 450C. I've managed to get the oil pan off the bottom and the head off the top of the engine. Now I just need to bar the engine over to get at the con rod bolts. Does anyone have a way to do that without disassembling the entire front of the loader?

You can remove timing pin at flywheel on left side of engine and turn it with a small bar 1 tooth at a time.

Several ways: bump it with the starter(amazon has a remote start device especially for this. Snap-On makes a real nice one) or grasp and rotate lower pulley at front. If you are going to re-use the old liners you need to make some hold downs to hold them on place in the block. You will also need the same hold downs if you install new liners.
New liner install: use dry ice to shrink them prior to install.
Pistons: ALL carbon must be removed from ring grooves and the grooves are a precision cut. New rings may or may not have a taper on outer surface. Book tells direction of taper.
Piston with new rings should be a snug fit in liner but you should not have to beat them into position.
Engine assembly lube: there is never "too much". Use liberally, even on liners before piston install.
Of all repairs, engine re-builds,especially in-frames,are probably my favorite.

Bump the starter. I feel a little silly now. I should have thought of that. The timing pin cover is great to know about. Thanks, all.

I wound up with a defective starter, so I removed the electric motor and the solenoid, and welded a nut to the shaft. I can remove the starter, bolt this in its place, and bar the engine over conveniently.

Hi,

There is an actual Deere tool to drive the ring gear with a ratchet. I have a couple different ones. Worth getting.

Why did you not remove the nose of the loader? I think people are sometimes make it out in their minds to be much harder than it actually is. I can have mine off in less than 15 minutes. Now dozer guys, they have real nose removal problems -_-

I had the hyd pump drive off for my rebuild. I bought a cheap 13? spline shaft and cut it short. Then welded a very large nut on it. Easy quick and now I can turn the engine over with a wrench. As long as the pump spline drive is off and out of the way. I think there is a picture of it in my long 3rd head gasket thread. I made a couple tools for the engine work. Bought a couple too.

Stan, do you have a part number for that tool? The few JD tools I've seen on fleabay have been priced for collectors, not for use.

I didn't have any way to lift the snout off over the loader arms when I started this. That's why I did it in-frame. Next time one of these goes into my shop, I want to take those damned arms off first!

Well if you can get the arms up either by it's own power or come along them up it's easy. You brace the arms up with angle iron drop a come along down and just lift the nose off. Once you brace the arms up they are typically not an issue, assuming you have the height to do that.

Hi,

I am unsure which the 450c uses. It is in the service manual for each machine. I had the one for my straight 350 which fits my 350C. But it didn't work on my 2008 5103 with the turbo 3-cyl. I had to get a different one from Deere. And, no, they are not cheap. But they work oh so well.
