Main Pump

Post by 77 Ford » Mon Mar 12, 2018 8:10 am

My main hydraulic pump is starting to leak. It leaks about a drip every 12 to 15 seconds(not under load at idle). I assume the pumps can be rebuilt but looking at the parts breakdown it doesn't appear there is a bushing in the front plate for the input shaft which is where it's leaking. Do I have to purchase a new front plate or do you have to replace the whole pump? I know most of the time just putting seals in will not stop the leak for long as there typically something wore out that makes the seal go bad.

77Ford, JD Parts book shows that as a shaft seal for main hydraulic pump.. depends which pump you have and which machine but it is replaceable.. I would say it is worth a try for the cost of a seal.. if that doesn't work you can always buy a pump after..
from my 350C book.

Just a quick follow up for closure. I removed the main pump and there was zero play in my input shaft. I think the seal had simply dry rotted out. I was able to source a seal. I called every bearing/seal place within an hour of me no one had it and it was going to be between 18 and 30 dollars. I found one at John Deere, in stock for 15 bucks.....

It's all back together and while I've not worked the machine I let it run for over 15 minutes and no sign of a leak yet.

I'd say the hardest part of the project is lifting the 5 gallon bucks of oil up to refill the reservoir, wan't much of a project at all.
