450c fuel tank sump
Did like the operators manual says and drained a cup from the fuel tank sump. It barely trickled out and was full of sediment. Has anyone removed the sump or the plumbing from it to the drain cock? Should I mess w this or just continue to drain a cup a day till it clears up? New dozer owner is like having your first kid, I don’t know what’s going on ha ha ha
Re: 450c fuel tank sump
I had the same issue. I ran the fuel tank down to about 5-10 gals. I bite the bullet, I felt the drain would never clean out with 1-2 cups at a time. I removed the pipe hardware and used a combination of picks, screwdrivers, wire and small fingers to break open and flush out a bunch of compacted scale. The fuel left in the tank was helpful in flushing. Now it works as it should. Take care, Bruce

After 30 or 40 years you would be surprised what collects in the fuel tank.Run the fuel down and bite the bullet an take it apart for a good cleaning. Will save you troubles in the future and you probably won't need to do it again for another 30 or 40 years.....

Hi,
Yep. This is one of those periodic maintenance items listed under '20 Years' in the manual....well, it ought to be, anyway!

Re: 450c fuel tank sump
Thanks for the replies. I’m sure I’ll be back w more questions soon. Thank you
Re: 450c fuel tank sump
One more word of advice. Be very gentle with the metal fittings in the sump drain. They are cast, they have a fairly large grain structure and have become more brittle over time. Ask me how I know!! I upgraded to steel fittings and I replace the valve with a 1/4 turn valve. Bruce
Re: 450c fuel tank sump
Yeah I had same issue with mine. It would run 30 mins and die. Had to clean fuel filter every time. I removed the fuel line and drain petcock and stuck the pressure washer in it. Clean as a whistle now. And that was several hours ago. Grass still doesn't grow where I cleaned it. Good for 30 more years.

Re: 450c fuel tank sump
Digging up an old thread...does anyone know what thread size the fuel sump drain is? The original plumbing from mine was removed and someone just replaced it with a pipe plug but I can't tell what size it is. I plan to replace with a street 90 and small ball valve for draining.
Re: 450c fuel tank sump
Parts catalog says 1/4" NPT. https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/sid ... gId/147937
Re: 450c fuel tank sump
Thanks Jim. Should have thought to look there
Re: 450c fuel tank sump
IIRC there is a reducing bushing, goes from 3/4” NPT to 1/4”. I have updated several of these. I like to use the forged SS fitting, the are less likely to become brittle/crystallized over time. 1/4” NPT ball valve that is 1/4 turn is the way to go. I use an airline fitting with quick connect and plastic 3/8” airline(the kind used on OTR trucks). I route the airline to the side of the machine to keep my machine cleaner. The airline is coiled and I use the coiled memory to point the sump stream to behind the right track. I keep the line tucked in front of the ROPS down brace. Hope this helps, Bruce

That sounds like a good plan. Thanks Bruce
