450 () Steering clutch/brake adjustments

Post by Cle Elum John » Fri Mar 30, 2018 1:22 pm

Hi
I am doing a steering clutch/brake adjustment on JD 450(no letter). I am going through it step by step per the manual. Got a couple of questions:

When the manual says adjust free play, does it mean when the top linkage first moves or when the throw out bearing first touches the clutch? I believe they mean at the throw out bearing but maybe a guy with experience can verify.

What is the thickness of the brake lining when new? Is there a way to check the thickness while it on the machine? It all looks pretty well hidden.

Thanks for any help.

Free play is the distance traveled from top of the pedal to first contact with the throw-out bearing. I'm not exactly sure of the brake material thickness. A guess would be 0.250. Bruce

Thanks Bruce

That is the way I had it figured. First touch with the throw out bearing. It's complicated by the problem of a lot of slop in the linkage. It a will get done right.

Thanks again
