Value time

Post by amos » Mon Apr 09, 2018 8:04 am

Lots of questions on equipment values. locally there is a 450C dozer on craigslist in NE Texas.6 way blade, factory limb risers, decent appearance, grousers a bit worn and winch on back,"runs good",supposed to have new radiator, water pump and belt. Call in to the man(awaiting call back) and the 3 pics he posted has my attention. $13,000.00.If he calls back I will go and take a look and either buy it or give everyone a more detailed eval based on my experience.

Hi,

Well, I just bought a 1978 JD350CG (G=Outside mount manual blade) with 3141 hours for $13k. The amount of wear on the machine actually looks to be less than the hour meter shows, so they were easier hours than they might have been.

I was very happy to find my 1999 450G (6-way, ROPS, Sweeps, 5 gang ripper, brush rake) w/ 3000 hours for $18K. It had original sprockets and rails, so I did spend some $$$ on new SALT rails and sprockets. I'd watched the price go down incrementally from $35K to $25K...took $20K with me, but caught the guy on a great day! It's been a sweet machine here at the ranch.

Hi,

That is just it. You are going to have to spend some dough in the end. The choice is on which end? If you buy low and do the work and buy the parts, you do know exactly what you have in the end. That may or may not be worth the effort. And, that is what motivated me to keep looking and pass on all those 'self propelled scrap piles' since 2005. It did help that I had a usable 420c on hand.

I did find a nice 350DE a year ago in Kentucky. It was $16.5k and I didn't buy it before I found someone to haul it. My setup is 420/440 weight capable but not up to the heavier 350. By the time I lined up a hauler, two days later, the 350D was sold. In the end, I have done better because Mark has gone over everything and performed a full service along the way. So, the 350CG will arrive ready to work. Plus, I prefer the outside blade as my main use is ditching my mile-long road and an outside blade lets my ride on the road rather than in the ditch. Far easier on the rollers. ;)

I picked up a local '78 450c loader for $3500.00. It had not been used in years and hour meter read 1234.5. Go figure, like someone disconnected it on purpose. Machine had more hours than was shown. The right final drive had issues as the sprocket hub was rubbing the rail. I new the bearings were gone but nothing more. The machine would start and run fine with no sign of blow by. Trans would shift properly. Decisions, decisions.
A good friend of mine (JD fanatic) offered his assistance and shop for the repairs. So I purchased the machine and had it delivered to his shop.
I think the hardest part of the tear down was breaking the track. We found the dimpled pin and removed the pads for access to hammer the pin out. All the pins were frozen from not being used so we heated the links with 2 torches. Lots on hammering and foul language but it did move. Track was stiff as a board. Would not roll off so we took his backhoe (JD) and pulled it forward.
Removed rear counter weight and sprocket weight installed the bolt above the pinion shaft to hold clutch pack in place and removed final drive housing and shaft.
Inside we found teeth from the bull gear in the oil pan. The loose teeth had busted the oil pan so there was no oil. The bull gear had damaged the pinion shaft. All seals were damaged.
Found all parts and pieces. Bull gear was 750.00. Pinion shaft 250.00. Seals and bearings 200. Used oil pan 200.00 Changed all filters and fluids 400.00. 1800.00 spent. It gets more expensive.
Got tractor back together and it worked fine. Strong engine with no smoke. Temp was fine. Too good to be true
Put about 1 hour on it and heard a sound like marbles in Trans. Shut it down immediately And pushed it back in shop with another loader and pulled the engine. 2 hours and it was out. Clutch had exploded. Well, the price keeps climbing.
The machine had low oil pressure and since the engine was out I had to examine the internals. We figured the machine had an in frame rebuild because it had no knock or blow by but that does not allow the balancer bushings to be replaced which can reduce oil pressure. Sleeves were shiny and engine looked good. Replaced main bearings just because it was apart and balancer bushings. Put it back together with a new clutch and and after 1500.00 it was running again. I thought
Another hour on the machine and it quit again. IP had broke. Removed it and had it rebuilt 700.00. Where does it end!
I can say the machine now has around 40 hours on it and doing fine. Tracks still have not lossened op but are getting better. So after all the problems and money spent you have to enjoy working on a loader. I have replaced seat, some hoses and guages. The price is around 8000.00. Still under the price of the machine. Think I'll keep it though

Hi,

Yup. After a certain amount of Blood, Sweat and Tears one keeps it and keeps on keeping on. Eventually you get it all caught up to. It is amazing how much $$$ goes for 'while I am in this deep, I oughta replace....' isn't it? ;)
