350 transmission fluid check

Post by Don2018 » Sun Apr 15, 2018 5:47 am

Hello everyone,
I've got a straight 350 with direction reverser. Can someone tell me where I check the transmission oil level? The reverser has the bayonet dipstick on the floorboard which is readily accessible and I know it's location. The service manual says 9 quarts for the transmission and 3 gallons for the reverser so I assume there is a separate dipstick for the transmission.

Also, can the filter for the reverser be accessed without removing the belly pan?

Thanks

Under the seat I think your transmission should have a dipstick at the front left side. Not sure its been a while since i have been around a 350, but I looked at the parts manual and I think that is where you find it.

You can get the manuals (printed or electronic) for your machine quick and easy from the John Deere technical publications site. The parts manual is available to view free on line at https://jdparts.deere.com/servlet/com.d ... country=SZ . You will have to purchase the operator's and technical manuals. I like the electronic versions as one can print out the pages needed and not carry a big manual around and risk damaging it.

You will likely get quicker and more responses to your 350 questions if you use the "Late model JD crawler technical support" forum, as it is for the 350's and newer. Welcome and Good luck.

Actually the transmission dipstick may be right near the left front of the seat beside the PTO lever, not under the seat.

Thanks. You’re correct. The dipstick is on left front. So much grease/dirt etc I couldn’t see it. You mentioned the pto lever. Is that what that lever is right next to the dipstick? What does it do? I don’t have a pto?

The PTO lever would be the little short lever just off the deck plates, left side just ahead of the seat base. Do you have a winch? That would be driven by the PTO. If you don't have a winch and you see just a cover plate at the rear, you don't have a PTO. I believe on some tractors, some of the internal PTO components were in place so the external PTO shaft could be added if desired, without splitting the tractor. Having the lever may be a sign yours is one of those units. Lavoy or some of the others on here can likely give you a better answer on that, than I have.

Jim
No winch or pto shaft on my 350 so it’s just the lever then. Thanks again for the info and I’ll also migrate over to the “late model” board as you suggested.
