Needle valve setting 450 hlr

Post by Rayman1975 » Fri Apr 20, 2018 6:01 pm

Hey guys, I have a straight 450 loader with the hlr tranny. I’m doing a major overhaul and need some help. I replaced the clutch oil manifold with a new one. The one setting that my book doesn’t have is the needle valve setting, don’t know how many turns off from bottomed it should be. Does anyone have info on what that setting should be, or at least start out at. Thanks!

The b manual says (with a pressure gauge at the test point):
When shifting from reverse to high or high to reverse, the oil pressure at the by-pass valve in the accumulator housing should drop from and return to engaging oil pressure in 1.5 seconds average. If deviation from this time is observed, readjust clutch oil manifold needle valve.
My understanding is the needle valve controls the harshness of the shift and not cracking your neck like a whip is a good thing.

edit to add:
Install needle valve in bore. Screw down until finger tight, and back off three turns. This is a preliminary setting. Tighten jam nut.

Ok got it! Thanks for the help Paul. One of these days I’ll post some pictures of my (little) project.
