350 question

Post by kratester » Thu Nov 02, 2006 2:15 pm

Well here's my sad story; something has let go in the clutch area of my 1966 350 crawler loader and is making a hellacious racket in there. It is something fairly large and with a substantial weight. I was backing away after pushing a couple stumps and shut it down immediately when it happened. Thinking the starter had engaged accidentally and knowing that it and the ignition switch were both marginal I replaced them. The tractor starts easily now and the motor seems to run smooth but the noise remains. I can only run it a couple seconds for fear of what damage I might be inflicting. Haven't tried to engage a gear or anything. Can feel only spring at the clutch pedal and the noise and feel seem to be taking place in the clutch housing. Looking at my parts book I am thinking either the clutch lever or pressure plate somehow broke; the reverser doesn't seem to have any thing at this end that would break off although I am only speculating.

Any thoughts and advice on the matter would be welcome as this is my first crawler. Also, any leads on obtaining a service manual for this machine that would leave some money in the bank for repairs would be welcome also! They are apparently rare to say the least. I have the owner's and parts manuals. Thanks, Walt

If you have a reverer, there is no clutch, and it is the isolator that has gone to pot.

Thank you. Looking at my part book, I can find no listing for an isolater, would it possibly be called by another name?

350 Isolator

Torsional Isolator Spring Problem:
Don't try to get away with replacing just the broken one - replace them all, or you will be pulling the engine out again in a week.
Also, replace the anchor studs if they show any wear at all and be sure to use Locktite on them.

Thanks for your help-my parts book inexplicably does not show the isolator at all so I went to the John Deere website and was able to get a look at it there. I do believe that it may just be the culprit.
