I got to study some today on this problem and after trying and watching movements in the steering assist cylinders I notice the left one goes further in than the right one. Would this cause the fluctuation on that one. While pulling lever back it tries to bounce back and forth when pulled all the way back. Half way back it feels normal. Does anyone think that an adjustment would fix this issue.

There should be no "all the way back", the brakes should be fully actuated when the lever is only a small ways pulled back, so yes, could very well be the issue.

How far back should the levers pull back.i would guess mine are around 10 to 12 inches. What kind of oil is best for the final drives. Book says hydraulic but would synthetic gear oil work as good too.

5" would be a lot.
I doubt it says hyd oil, it might say 303 which is a transhydraulic/multitrans/common systems fluid. Hyd oil is for hyd only, the other stuff is for both so to speak
Synthetic gear lube will not hurt anything, not any cheaper than getting Hygard or equivalent.

Your right Lavoy, 303 is what it calls for. I just assumed it was hydraulic oil. What do you recommend for oil types and brands in the reverse, tranny, and final drives.

Hi,

303 marked oil isn't a good idea any more. What you want is a tractor transmission, gear and hydraulic fluid. Deere's own brand is HyGard, which is what I use. There are less costly brands, of course. Read the label, though. You want something that lists J14 (letter unimportant for your need) under Deere on the label or, better yet, J20A or J20C.

We have stores around here called Tractor Supply and they sell a Tractor Fluid under their Traveller brand name which meets J20C specs. I think most areas have a similar type of store and they all sell such stuff.

A warning, though, they also tend to have these bright yellow pails with 303 in big green numbers. Don't buy that! Yes, it is cheaper but it is known to cause trouble to the point where states are starting to outlaw the stuff.

BTW, J14A, B and C were the Deere spec numbers back when they sold the actual 303. It Went Away as the formula called for sperm whale oil, and was replaced by J20A which they sold under the HyGard name. J20A was replaced by J20C and is what Deere sells as HyGard now. There is a low viscosity HyGard called J20B and J20D, which you don't want in this application.

We have a place called Fleet Farm here, and they stock a lot of the correct oil, meets the J20 Deere specs, that is what I use. If not, just buy the actual HyGard from Deere. You can also get correct equivalents for an oil jobber too. Mobil equivalent used to be 423, then 424, but have not bought any from them in too many years to know current variant.

Found some oil at NAPA for $45 for 5 gallons. Got everything back together and adjusted. The right side which is the one I had apart steers great now. The left side steers but not to good. I have to pull the lever all the way back towards the seat for it to work. Is there an adjustment I can try to do or is it time for a new clutch.

Normally that is an adjustment.

I readjusted the left side again and still the same result. I see the throw out bearing push the pressure plate in at the same time as the right side. Both levers pull back and make contact against the pressure plate at the same distance at the same time. The left side then pulls back 4 to 5 inches more than the right one. I figure the brake band would make it stop at the same distance as the right side. All movements look the same on the left and right til that certain point where the left goes futher back. Could I have a brake band problem on that side as well? While driving the left side will not turn til i pull the lever all the way back. Also both tracks stop moving when pulled back the same distance which tells me the clothes are working properly, I guess. It's got me puzzled.

Hi,

Sounds like both clutch packs are releasing if the machine stops when both levers are pulled back. They are supposed to release before the brake bands engage the drums. If the left lever goes further back than the right, and it won't steer left as well, then you have a brake band issue.

Thanks Stan, that is what I was afraid of. When I first got the machine I had to pull the levers way back for it to steer. After replacing the right side because the band broke it works like Lavoy explained in an earlier post. I'm wandering now if it is half broke into not letting it operate as it should. I notice now that when the brake is applied that the pin that the brake adjustment bolt goes through rides up lope sided. Has anyone else out there had this issue before.
