Setting clutch on a JD450()

Post by Cle Elum John » Mon May 21, 2018 3:13 pm

Hi
I am replacing the clutch on a JD450() with an HLR. The manual shows using a modified JD227 tool for the settings. I talked to Lavoy today and the tool is not available and may not be for a couple of weeks. My understanding is that the tool sets the distance from the finger levers to the face of the flywheel. Does anyone know what this distance should be?

Also I saw a thread, maybe on this forum, showing how to do the same job with a couple of strait edges clamped together. I have not been able to find it. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks for any help
John

I was looking more for the write up on setting the main engine clutch on installation with the engine off. I did book mark the one you sent, I will need to do that pretty soon.

This one is posted by @Lavoy, he mentions having the tool.

Much closer. I need the jd227 gauge not the jd7. Lavoy has none in stock. I saw a write up on how to do the setup without the tool. All I really need is the offset dimension. Maybe I saw it on a different message board. Oh well.

Thanks

From the section covering adjusting the clutch levers with the JD227 gauge in a 450B manual:

"Place the gauge over the pressure plate with the gauge legs resting on the flywheel and notched area over a clutch lever. Move the adjusting screw in or out to place clutch levers at the proper level (2.000 +- 0.03 inch). Repeat the above procedure on remaining clutch levers. Refer to Fig. 4."

It goes on to talk about exercising the clutch levers as in the # 286 service bulletin.

I saw a picture where someone cut out an outline in plywood and used a sliding mechanics rule, but it didn't have measurements or a scale template to reproduce it though.

I have a 450(), I wonder if it is 2" also. Does the 450B manual recommend using he JD227 gauge with the cutout? The manual for the 450 does not give any dimension. I saw something like the method that psprague described in a post except they used metal scales clamped together. I can't find it and its driving me nuts. It must have been on a different message board.

The JD227 gauge is 2.000 +/- 0.03". from the end of the legs to the tab the fingers contact.

Jim B. At the risk of being a PITA I have a follow up question. The manual for the 450() says to modify the the 227 as shown in the attachment. Then measuring finger height at the .156" notch. Is the 2"+/-.03 measured on the 227 tool before or after modification? John Deere could have made this a lot easier by just giving us the measurement in the manual. We can all do simple math.

Thanks everyone for the help. I would like to get it right the first time and the effort really is appreciated.

ok...here are some measurements...i had made a pattern but did not finish as only have hand tools to finish...believe was jd227 as used on 2010 engine clutch.

the outside long legs overall are 4.75 inches long and 8/10 in wide
center sections is 2.66 in. long and 3 1/10 in wide
short outside ears are 7/10 in long and 8/10 in wide
center section is 6/10 in long 3 1/10 wide
long ears are 3 1/10 in long and 8/10 in wide

could be off a hair as just scratched the pattern from the original gauge and owner needed it back..made pattern from 3mm aluminum plate

yeah and you need to know the overall length of the gauge is 13 1/4 inches....almost forgot that!

hope it helps

Hi John,

No problem. If I stand (long legs down) the JD227 gauge I got from Lavoy a couple years back on a flat surface it is 2.000" from the surface to the center "tab". This gauge has the notch cut out on the left side of the center tab as shown in your photo, it does not have the angled cut on the right side.

As far as setting the fingers at the .156" cut out I don't know, but that would put the fingers at 2.156", if you set them there. I don't know what model your 450 () is, or what your manual says. I can only tell you the 450B manual I have says 2.000" +/- 0.003, which would be the original center tab of my gauge. This 450B manual has a note about removing 1/4" of material from the arms so they will clear the spring ring. This gauge from Lavoy looks to already have this modification as well. Instead of the arms being straight from the center tab out to the legs, this one has been relieved 1/4" up into the arm for a distance of about 3" each side of the center tab. JD also refers to the gauge as JD227A now, which maybe a new gauge with these field modifications already done. I am thinking the .156" notch was for something else, from something I read, somewhere.

Sorry I slipped and misplaced the decimal point. Dimension in manual is 2.000" +/- 0.030" for the finger height.
