HLR pressure gauge.

Post by Cle Elum John » Fri Jun 08, 2018 4:00 pm

I want to put a permanent dash mounted HLR pressure gauge on a JD450(). Right now I have a gauge mounted to the port under the shift controls. When the outside cover (not the allen head pressure screw, the threaded disk) is removed I am getting a little oil splashing from inside the case and onto the floor. Is there another place that I can put a pressure tap? Preferably someplace with enough room to install an electronic sender unit with no additional plumbing.

Thanks
John

I understand that some 450's actually came with a sender unit and gauge. Does anyone know where the sender was mounted? I see the gauge wiring in the parts list but I have no clue where sender is located.

Thanks

I think mine might have had a transmission oil temperature gauge, or so the manual says.

Mine has the HLR temperature gauge also. The manuals seem to indicate there was also a pressure gauge also. Maybe it was only on a few units. I am trying to figure out where the sender was located.

On my 455D the access plug in the transmission top cover under the seat that lets you check transmission pressure has a pipe thread. I can't remember the size; same as a 55 gallon drum I think. I replaced the screw out plug with a short pipe nipple and screwed a pipe cap on the nipple. I drilled a hold in the cap so I could run a nylon tube from the test port (1/8 NPT Female, I think) under the floorboard to the back of the dash. I cut a hole in the dash and mounted a 2" 0-200PSI mechanical gauge with a restrictor to dampen the pressure pulses.

A tube to the top pressure port was my "plan b". I was hoping to find a place to mount an electronic sender and there is no room for a sender under the cap. Plan B is starting to look better.

If that cover really is the same as a 55ga drum hole cover I can drill a hole in it, use an extender and mount an electronic sender below the HLR controls. I don't want to drill holes in the original cover. Call this Plan B Rev 2. I still wish there was a better pressure port.

I, for one, do not want a high-pressure high-temperature oil line, down around my feet, pointing upward, to fail. Just no.

I have had bad experience with the oil tubes leaking and making a mess in a reasonably nice car. I am not bad with a electric sender running up to a gauge provided it is not in an area likely to get damaged. I am going to take a second look at it to see if there is room.
