450B transmission
I have bought a 450B, model# T5F3C which is a collar shift transmission. It is not shifting the collar all the way over the reverse gear. I can not find a parts or service manual for this trans, just HLR diagrams. Any help?

Are you looking at/for Deere manuals?

Re: 450B transmission
Proper adjustment and removing as much slop in the pin/clevises are where I would start. I agree with Lavoy, the proper owners manual, parts manual and the service manual are a must.

Re: 450B transmission
I have a 1170 parts catalog and a TM-1033 service manual. Both show the H-L-R transmission only. Also all my web searches show that too. Serial number is 0766431.

Re: 450B transmission
Hi,
You sure about that serial number. As in the last digit is a 1 and not a T. It ought to end with a T. Plus, you have a leading 0. That makes me think you have a 1968 Straight 450. The collar shift trans also makes me think you have a straight 450 and not a B. If the serial started with a 7 it would be a 450G.....
I think the collar shift trans on the 450 was optional on the early machines much like the reverserless option on the 350. By the B series they were dropped. This would make sense why there is no info on them in later manuals.....
I think you need to go back to the straight 450 books: SM2064 and PC922. Anyone here have those to check and see if the info on the collar shift trans needed is in there for sure?
Stan

Re: 450B transmission
Thanks for the info, you might be right about the serial number. The data plate is damaged and that is what I read it as, but very well could be wrong. I was in the forestry service and I thought they might have ordered it with collar shift instead of H-L-R trans. I will get on JD site and look at the parts manual for a straight 450. The linkage seems tight (no play) when you shift it by hand on the side of the case. It moves to indent and hits solid but the collar is barely engaging the reverse gear and only engages the low fwd about half way. I seems to be something in the rail or selector bent or broken.

The 450 manual SM2064 has the disassembly and adjustment procedures.

Hi,
Yeah, the plates get whacked. Or, get gone. At least with a whacked one we can eventually figure it out!

Re: 450B transmission
Guys, thanks for your input. I have ordered the correct service manual and will report what I find the culprit to be when I get it fixed. I have looked the internal linkages over good and everything seems to be working with no slack, just not enough movement to properly engage. Just one more of the joys of owning old machinery.

Re: 450B transmission
Does anyone have a reverse gear (AT14897) and shift collar (T17532) for a straight 450 crawler? New or a good used one.
Thanks
Randy

I could help you out but the tax on importing steel products from Canada could be a killer.
Re: 450B transmission
Is a collar shift and a constant mesh trans the same thing? I have the PC922 manual and it shows HLR and constant mesh.

Re: 450B transmission
Yes they are the same, the model breaks down as a collar shift and the service manual calls it a constant mesh.
