Fan belt on a 450()

Post by Cle Elum John » Fri Jun 22, 2018 9:45 am

I have read a couple posts about replacing the fan belt. A real horror show for simple maintenance. Has anyone tried using a 5/8 link belt? If I have to go back and retension it a couple of times so be it. Heck I once used a nylon stocking on a car (not mine I swear) it worked for about 20 miles.

Which wasn't yours; the car or the stocking?

I have a couple different sizes of the rolls of link belts and have made/used some link belts to get by. They do work but I got the regular belts back on as soon as I could. They were often hard to get the links right to end up tight enough for the adjustment range the first time. They usually need more frequent adjustments as they seemed to wear quicker. I don't think they were really intended for service on engines. Buy the best quality belt you can, put it on during a planned maintenance window, Don't let it slip, adjust when needed and it will last for years, IMHO.

For the record, neither.

Sad thing is I just had the engine off for a clutch. I am new to the machine and did not think to look at the belt. Alternator just gave up and I was going to replace the belt at the same time. Not cracked and it looks about 30% left. Gonna leave it, use the link belt or a nylon stocking as a back-up like you suggest.

Next time I pull any engine I an going to make a list of things to do. Like that slow leak pan gasket.

Thanks

I believe I used a 5/8 belt when I replaced my water pump and fan. Also, I put 2 additional around the jack shaft going to the pump so if I shred another belt I have another ready to go.

Stashing extra belts is a great idea. I am going to do that when the time comes to replace the belt.
