Steering cylinder removal JD 350

Post by Don2018 » Wed Jul 25, 2018 10:04 am

1966 350 diesel loader with power steering

I need advice on how to remove a steering cylinder.

I started to try and remove the cracked left steering cylinder (as viewed from behind the machine facing forward). I went in through the small space between the fuel tank and the top of the transmission. I tried to remove the right side bolt that holds the cylinder to the cylinder mounting bracket (Fig.145-5-1 of the Service Manual). I could not get enough leverage with my 3/4" open end wrench to break it loose. Not only that, I cannot even visually see the left bolt from that position. I also tried to get at those bolts from up above after removing the seat cushion but access from there is even worse. There is a flat bar that is part of the Rear Tank Unit (Fig. 20-30-2) that covers the area that I need to get to.

It seems to me that the ROPS and the Rear Tank Unit are going to have to be removed just to exchange that cylinder.

Has anyone done this before and can you offer any advice? Any help would be appreciated.

I've done it, too long ago to remember anything specific, but it is a pain.

I had my steering cylinders out last year to rebuild on my 350b dozer. Not sure if it’s exactly the same as the loader but there’s an access plate on battery box/ seat wall. I took that off and was able to get better access. If you look between top of tracks and bottom of battery box/ hydraulic tank you should see it. Not much room in there especially taking the hydraulic hoses off.

Good luck!

Lavoy do you remember whether or not you took the fuel tank, rops, etc off?

Mxzfx4 it sounds like you changed the cylinder without taking the fuel tank, rops off?

Still need more advice from anyone that's out there.
Thanks

Yeah I didn’t remove tanks or rops. That 3/4” bolt I believe I used some swivel joists and long extension from the side. I think you just need to loosen that bolt then the ear will pop out of the cylinder. And the pins that go through the front and rear yoke.

Hey Mxzfx4
Thanks for your previous advice. I found the panel between the track and battery box you mentioned. I never new it was there. I did get my steering cylinder changed. I took off the seat frame and that flat bar that helps supports the armrests of the cab. When all of that is out of the way, it's not really too difficult. I rebuilt the used, salvage cylinder with a kit from JD before installing.
