JD 450c runs for short time and stops but will immediately restart

Post by Jmain3009 » Thu Aug 02, 2018 2:01 pm

Have a sound 1980 JD 450c loader. Ran great and then began stalling out as it it was running out of fuel. It will repeatedly re start immediately a will take throttle for less than a minute or two and then acts like it is starving for fuel, then shuts down. To fix I Have change the fuel out and cleaned tank ( almost no dirt in tank ), made sure tank vent line open and injector return line open, changed the fuel filter and filter refilled with hand pump quickly, changed air filter and made sure no air intake obstructions. Disconnected fuel selonoid contact wire at injector pump post while running and it shut down ( as it appears it should work). Had return line open as it was shutting down and it appeared to still have some return pressure and fuel running. What else should I do to fix it? Thanks

I know you said the tank vent line is open, but.. have you tried running the tractor with the fuel tank cap off? I'm grasping at straws, as you have done a lot. ?injection pump.i know you said the return line was still flowing. Bruce

Yes I ran as well with cap off to double check. Also I just pulled off the timing cover plate on the injection pump to check for crud as another suggested and some fuel came out. Is that supposed to happen? And if not what does it suggest? Was clean inside it. When I started it today ran as it should for about 2-3 minutes including taking full throttle before dying off. Each time after that ( almost immediately about 4 times) it started right up but died off fairly quickly. That’s where I am at??? Any other checks / ideas before I have to pull the ignition pump?

Hi,

Yeah, some fuel comes out the timing window when you take the cover off. There should be a good fuel flow out the back end of the IP going back to the tank. From the sound of it, you have a restriction in the return line. What it is doing is exactly what they do when there is a restriction in the return line. Now, the question is: is 1980 new enough to where we don't have to think Pellethane ring and 'mouse turds'??

Try removing the return fitting out of the top of the injection pump and try runnng with it removed.

I'm betting this is the problem. I had a JD 300B tire tractor with the same symptoms. That fitting is a check valve making that fuel line one way.

How do you check for the mouse turds?

If you remove only the return line and not the check valve then watch to see if flow stops from obstruction by mouse turds. If you remove the fitting then catch what comes out while running and look for them. They usually appear in the timing window you removed but found clean.

I disconnected the return line connector at the injection pump and it ran normal. Although line was totally clean something had affected the little foot valve. I cleaned it and put it back in and runs fine. Thanks for the good advice. Glad I did all the other work that let me know how good of shape my 450 is in.
