Looks like a good machine. It may be terminology but I don't think you mean to put a "pin over the top roller" to measure internal wear. To stretch the track chains for measuring; it is common to place a pin (about the diameter of a track bushing and longer than the width of the chain rails) into a drive sprocket cup (under the chain about 10 o'clock) and carefully back the crawler up. This should stretch the track tight. If you have a helper, one of you can watch for slight rearward movement of the adjuster as the track spring starts to compress while the other person backs the machine. If the adjuster seals are bad they may not hold pressure to stretch the track until they bottom out. It is recommended the master link/pin is not included in the section you measure.

Hi,

One thing about turning pins and bushings is the chain 'snake' remains afterwards. So, while the pitch shortens up to go with new sprockets, the chains will still flex too much sideways putting extra wear on the roller flanges. Something to consider.

Well darn you are correct Jim, my old brain remembered seeing something in the track section of the service manual about having a pin over the top carrier roller, but that was when measuring track sag, not chain stretch, and yes I remember seeing the trick with the pin, I will try that this weekend, thanks for the reminder.

Stan yes, snake will still be there, I don't know how much this machine will have, will find out soon. I will probably split one track to make a proper assessment of rollers, idlers pins/bushing etc.

Thanks!

Well she is home and in the driveway...batteries are charging and ready to go thru it tomorrow. I had a "Raiders of the Lost Ark" experience today, trying to find the hydraulic adjusters, like digging for the lost Ark, so embedded in dirt, packed so hard that a pry bar could barely dislodge the dirt. Finally fired up the steam cleaner and hit it with 3000PSI and although it took a while, finally found the adjusters, washed the rest of the machine and found that the 2 front idlers are different, one has a grease fitting and dirt shield, the other doesn't, but the grease fitting could just be missing, but they are definitely different. Tranny oil nice and clean, couldn't find the HLR dipstick, still looking for a service manual for the machine.

Now something bizzare, the fellow that delivered it, I asked him to go over the scales on the way here and then on the way back, so I could find out the weight to determine if I need a new trailer, and it only weighs 8600lbs, how can that be? This should be a lot more than my 350. I think the data sheet says 14,400lbs. Anyway, I don't want to try loading it on my flat deck based on that one scale reading, unless somebody can confirm that is close?

Cheers and more updates tomorrow.

Hi,

Edit: never mind me. I had images of a different machine in my head. This one has sealed rollers and dozer tracks. Weight still wrong, though.

Maybe 8600 pounds after you blasted away the dirt which was holding the rust in place..... :P

No, that can't be right. This is a 4 *50* , not a 4 *40*. ;)

The original rollers and idlers would have had buttonhead grease fittings. It looked to me in the pics that the rollers had no fittings. Later ones are sealed and have no fittings. May well have been replaced when they put on loader tracks. But. Also look on the inside of all of them and see if they are on backwards. Meaning, they still have fittings but are on wrong. Wouldn't be the first time I saw that.

You may have all this info already but in case not. From the on line JDparts Homepage you can access their technical manuals site and purchase printed, CDs, or downloads of your manuals. Stan has a post listing the manual numbers by machine in the FAQ section. It looks like you need a TM 1102 Technical (service) manual. The parts catalog number is PC 1443; parts catalogs you can access on line with out purchasing, unless you want a copy. The operator's manual in Stan's shows as OM T62743. When I looked at the JD site I couldn't find that one. They show OM T71337 and OMT71338 as choices now, I don't know what the differences are in the two. eBay of course is a source for used manuals.

Checked, and no they are not on backwards, just non lubable....and loader tracks? Are these loader tracks? They look like normal grousers to me, however I could be wrong. Pics on page 1.

Thx

PS thx Jim, yes aware of the sources, just trying to find one in Canada as ordering from the US, $100 ends up costing $250 by the time it's here.

Hi,

Ah. I was thinking of a different machine, a 350 dozer, with lots of rust and worn out loader tracks. These are dozer ones, of course.

Looking at the pics again, yes, they look like sealed rollers.
