One of the steering clutches on my 450() slips at high load. Mostly when the clutch on the opposite side is declutched and pulling in lo/1st. The clutch needs to be replaced but is there anything I can do to get it to lock better for the time being. I suspect the answer is "no" but I thought I would ask anyway.

Be sure it's adjusted correctly. The less you try to turn, while under load, the longer it will last. When pushing straight the clutches are sharing the work but, when turning, all the work is forced upon one clutch.

I looked at the adjustment. I made sure that there was throwout bearing free play. I was hoping there was some clever trick to tighten it without pulling everything. Replacing the clutches is a big job, but the dozer is still useful for the time being.

Hi,
Until the clutch pack makes a loud screeching sound and that track goes in to neutral and then the machine winds up driving in a big circle. Guess how I know about that.
If you are lucky, you can drive it back to the shop by frequently stopping and reversing and steering on the remaining track. Unless it, too, makes a loud screeching sound.....
