JD 350 INJECTOR/STARTING PROBLEM?

Post by SGMKEV » Mon Sep 10, 2018 3:45 pm

Ok, new guy here...was running my 350 dozer with 6 way (diesel) yesterday, it was running perfectly (drove it about a half mile to shape up the road going down to the lake) was doing a little shaping of the road and she just stopped dead, no chugging, no rough running, wasn't under a real heavy load, it just died.
Troubleshooting: (I am by no means a mechanic and don't claim to be)
- I checked the electrical system, it cranks and there's power to the Injection pump.
- I then started at the fuel tank and worked my way to the injectors.
- Tank was half full of good fuel.
- fuel shut off on the bottom of the tank was open.
- cracked the output side of the lift pump and had fuel.
- took the fuel filter off and it looked good.
- cranked the engine and fuel gushed out.
- put the fuel filter back on.
- removed input fuel line to the injector and cranked the engine, plenty of fuel
- reconnected input fuel line.
- removed output fuel line to injectors and cranked the engine, had fuel there.
- reconnected output fuel line.
- opened the fuel line going to each cylinder to bleed off any air in the system and had fuel to each.
- cranked the engine and she popped, then died, then it just cranks for the most part, waited a minute, tried it again and same thing, it wants to start but doesn't. Starting fluid didn't help.
- removed the return line connection on the injector and had fuel under pressure there.

I was told by the previous owner that the engine was rebuilt and only has 20 hours on it. I have probably put another 10 on it.

I didn't blow the lines but I will next weekend when I go back. Will take the generator and air compressor.

I didn't check to see if the return line was dumping fuel back in the tank.

I am completely baffled being it just stopped and now won't start.

I assume it's something with the injector pump but I know absolutely nothing about them...I'm a half mile from the farm and winters coming!

Any insight/help and or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Respectfully,

SGMKEV

I would suggest two additional diagnoses. First make sure the engine can get air. A blockage may let it fire once or twice after sitting. The second is a little more difficult. Check the pump timing. If timing is off to the point that you can't rotate the pump and bring it in then you have a bigger problem. Pump drive. Cam timing. ??

Check the fitting on the return fuel line at the injector pump. It is a check valve. There's a little ball in there.

Hi,

It does sound like the fuel return line is plugged up. Hopefully not with bits of that ring inside the IP. Chances are, it is.

Thanks Stan I will check this out when I get back up there. Worse case scenario and I have mouse turds, what is my next step? What is your recommendation? I have a fair amount of decent mechanical skills and am not opposed to doing the refit myself or is it just better to take it to a pro and have them take care of it?

Next question I have is from reading a lot of mouse turd posts...what is the process for removing the IP properly so it works once it is put back on? I see people talking about TDC and lining up the flywheel and a bolt and scribing lines on the pump? And about all it did was make it a little more confusing.

Thanks again for your wisdom!

Hi,

For me, I take pumps to a shop where they have the tools, parts, and knowledge. It is an area I do not wish to learn by doing.

You need to use the flywheel tool and get it to where the IP shows TDC. Then, pull the pump. Might want to get the tongs-like tool for the umbrella seal as well.

Of course, you have the flywheel tool from when you set the valve lash, right? ;)

I suppose you can bump the starter with the wire pulled from the IP solenoid and the timing window off. I think many folks do it this way. Me, I have the flywheel tool.

You have to know it is set to TDC on #1 as you will get the pump back set there.

If you are going to try the pump rebuild yourself, you might want to take a lot of pics as you disassemble it.

There is about a thousand pieces in there that have to be reassembled in the correct sequence. I did one

off a 1010 dozer and, with my crappy memory, I had a tough time getting back together.
