450C ignition wiring
450C ignition wiring
please excuse me if this has been covered. My search results didn't quite answer my question.
I have a mid 70s 450C dozer which I had to completely re wire.
the trouble I'm having is wiring the ignition key switch, can anyone clue me in to what wires attach to the
Bat terminal, ign terminal and the Acc terminal.
Thanks

Re: 450C ignition wiring
Hi,
I am used to crawler key switches having one pole with one throw. So, Batt to the battery and Ign to the IP solenoid and the lights. The starter is a separate push button. This is true for my 350C and I would expect it to be the same on your 450C.
If you have a key switch with an Acc position, leave it unhooked or hang your lights onto it if you want a way to energize those without the IP solenoid.

Re: 450C ignition wiring
Yep this is a diesel Dozer
it has a key 3 pole key switch and a push button starter. I have the lights and gauge power on the Acc terminal.
Power from the hot side of the starter through the amp gauge then a fuse then to the Bat. terminal.
The ign. terminal has neutral safety swithch, wire to the S terminal on the solenoid.
Somehow I have messed up and the engine turns over with the key or when I switch the main battery switch on
Thank You

Re: 450C ignition wiring
Don't forget that you need to run a hot wire to the Injector pump when the key is turned on. That wire will allow fuel to the injectors when on and stop fuel to the injectors when turned off.

Re: 450C ignition wiring
Hi,
Power runs thru the Safety switch and then to the starter. How they ran it, I am not sure offhand. I would feed the starter button via the Ign terminal (both right next to each other) and then to the Safety and then to the Starter. That way, the starter won't engage with the key off.

Re: 450C ignition wiring
This is a 450B schematic but it should be about the same and may help you.

Re: 450C ignition wiring
I don't know as that schematic will be legible for you. Below is the basic description.
1. Wire power from battery terminal of starter solenoid to ammeter
2. Wire Ammeter to fuse or circuit breaker
3. Wire Circuit breaker to battery terminal of ignition switch
4. Wire Ignition Switch’s ignition terminal to hour meter and injection pump fuel shut-off solenoid
5. Wire Ignition Switch’s ignition terminal to start button
6. Wire Starter button to Neutral switch
7. Wire Neutral switch to the starter solenoid energize/pull-in terminal
8. Wire from Ignition Switch accessory terminal to ignition terminal of voltage regulator
9. Wires from Ignition Switch accessory terminal to gauges, light switch, and other accessories
10. Wire from ammeter (same terminal as wire to fuse or circuit breaker is on) to battery terminal of Alternator
11. Wire power from battery terminal of starter solenoid to Battery Terminal of voltage regulator

Re: 450C ignition wiring
Thanks Everyone that's more and better information than I received from any where else.
I would like to see the schematic but how do I enlarge it ?
I an not very tech smart and this is the first forum I have ever used

Re: 450C ignition wiring
I haven't figured out how to get it to resize. Send me a PM with your email and I'll send it as a photo and a PDF in a regular email which you should be able to see. You should watch eBay for a used technical manual or you can get new printed, CD, or downloads from John Deere technical publications on line. Handy to have.
Re: 450C ignition wiring
I found how to change it from thumbnail to normal which helps. My offer to email is still open.
Re: 450C ignition wiring
Thanks everyone for all your help. Great advice, the dozer runs, starts and everything goes on and off when it's supposed to
Thanks a bunch

Hi,
Yes. Indeed. A machine that won't go when you need it is useless for sure!
