1982 450 c fuel tank screen

Post by skunk237 » Thu Dec 20, 2018 11:18 am

This is my first crawler and am new to the forum. Thanks in advance for any help. My 450c crawler did as many and lost power and then would only start and run 30 seconds before shutting down. I have replaced the fuel transfer pump, replaced the fuel filter, and bled the lines to injector and return line. I am now in process of trying to change the filter screen in the tank... I have the fitting off the bottom of the tank but how the heck does the filter come out!!!!!! It was full of junk.... I finally got an awl to go through it but cannot for the life of me get it out... Does it screw out,, or is it plastic and just pull out..... Need some help.... I use the machine on our farm now that we are retired...… Many thanks....

I believe the screen is metal and non-replaceable for the out-going fuel line. Have you checked/cleaned/ flushed the sump drain at the bottom of the tank? These are some of the most neglected pieces on our machines.

It is my understanding the filter in the fuel line is to keep big pieces in the tank. As it sediments, you are supposed to open the sump drain regularly to get rid of water/contaminated/debris etc.

As a side note, have you confirmed the tank vent is clear?
Best regards, Bruce

I'm not sure on your 450 but, there is a check valve on the return fuel line on the injector pump. It will be a fitting that is screwed into the pump that the fuel line connects to. There's a tiny ball inside that opens and closes which when it fails causes the machine to run briefly then shut down. Very easy to replace and a cheap repair.

If your finding the mouse turds/crap in the pump and check valve it isn't a normal clean it out and it will be fine thing. It means the pellathane ring is coming apart. Short them is to clean the crud out to the check valve, long term is get the pump repaired. If not, it will eventually seize and bust the shaft off. Look for posts about mouse turds, common issue with the older machines.

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on owning a crawler! The screen threads out, the ones on the 350C are plastic. The may have been metal at one point. You can use a flatblade screwdriver when all goes well. If it's to the point of no return, you may be able to use an easy-out and extract it. Only the B, C and D machines use this style tank with a sediment bowl, and outlet screen.
