I have a 81 JD 550 crawler and there is some type of filter mounted in the battery box with 2 fluid lines coming from the base of it. I cant find anything in the manual referring to this filter. Can anyone help me identify what this is. It appears one of the lines goes into crankcase on lower right side of engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: JD 550 ?
This looks like a relocate of the transmission filter. Is there a filer under the seat as well.

Re: JD 550 ?
There is still the transmission filter under the seat, in fact I pulled it out yesterday evening when I took the picture of this thing. I kind of thought like you that it was some type of bypass filter for easier access and maybe it is. I just got the machine and I'm in the process of replacing all the fluids and filters. I guess I will just open it up and take a look inside. Like I said it appears one line goes down into the side of the crankcase below the fuel pump on right side of engine (seephoto). Still have to trace other line to see where it ends up. Thanks for the reply. Wish me luck!

Any numbers or letters on the inside of the cover?
Re: JD 550 ?
That is one place I dont recall looking very closely. I'll be back at the machine in a few days and check it out. I've found online that it looks like a Kleenoil or Filtakleen cartridge and closer to the Filtakleen based on its size. Thanks for your help Jim.
