69 450 alternator wiring

Post by Rayman1975 » Fri Feb 08, 2019 9:09 am

I rewired my 450 loader because the old stuff was brittle and cracked. One question i have is on the back of the original Motorola alternator. Should there be a small jumper wire between the G terminal and the F terminal on the back? My loader is SN 86000ish if that helps. Maybe someone could look on the back of theirs and let me know what they got? Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob,

I don't have a 450 to look at and hopefully someone will pitch in with what theirs looks like. I am guessing you don't have a service manual with wiring diagram to look at. In the meantime I will offer this note that I found in a 450B manual.

"IMPORTANT: Voltage regulators with part numbers AT63382, AT42450, AT29078 and AT21816 must have the alternator field wire connected to the alternator ground terminal. Regulators with part number AT41069 must have the alternator field wire connected to the alternator STA terminal."

It looks like the 450 and 450B use some of the same charging system components if you follow substitutions in the parts catalogs. So if you had a jumper there before and you can match a regulator number there is a good chance it is right.
Jim

Thanks Jim. When i gutted mine i dont remember seeing a jumper wire.......ill check my voltage regulator and see what number it has go from there. Just cant understand how grounding the field terminal would make it work correctly. But i guess if it works then it dont matter!
