3315 winch freespool not working

Post by Warrior0677 » Fri Mar 29, 2019 2:50 pm

Good evening. I have a 3315 winch that I've recently installed on my 81 model 350C. I'm going to try to post this in bullet points format.

1. "Winch in" works fine with 900 psi.
2. "Free spool" doesn't work at all. Tested against a tree with no unwind
3. Took quill off. Ensured the spring anchor pin and spring anchor were adjusted to 4.675 (4 11/16").
4. No oil in side compartment. It has all new seals from previous owner.
5. Put quill back on and removed small panel from the quill. Visually watch brake cylinder during operation. "Winch in" operates perfectly. "Freespool" has no movement at all.
6. Removed hydraulic pump cover on the bottom. Screen is clean.

And here's the major question:

There are 2 plugs under the left side of the winch. The outer plug is a drain plug for any oil that may leak into that compartment. The inner plug (I've read) is a pressure test port for the free spool mode. When I removed the plug, there appears to be a ton of grease packed in there.
What am I missing?
Idiot question...is that grease supposed to be there?
If not, anyone have any ideas on how it got there?
Also, if said grease was stopping the flow/pressure for the free spool, wouldn't it also stop the pressure for the "Winch in" mode? They both appear to use the same port/line for oil flow.

Obviously I haven't taken this thing apart yet. I really didn't want to start until I get some feedback from the experts. I know it's a lot of questions so any and all info is greatly appreciated.

I havent removed the hoses or the control valve to look for obstructions yet.

Before anyone asks...its a spool valve. Lol.

Thank you.

What control valve is on your winch. Ah, just read farther!! Spool valve. Has it been apart? With new o-rings? Are the hoses routed properly?? Are the hoses new?? Usually the free spool issue is a valve problem, esp since the slave cylinder on the brake looks normal.

The grease in your test port is poor maintenance and is a combo of debris, old oil etc. this space is a dead end and catches all. The brake release and the clutch for winch in use the same pressure source and test port.

Bruce! It's good to hear from you buddy. Thank you for answering my question. I've never had this winch apart so I wasn't able to visualize what was happening. If it's a dead space and you don't think it's causing my issue, I'll proceed to removing the control valve and hoses to look for obstructions/damage. The manual doesn't show anything about tests so I was only going off of what I had read on another post.

Any other suggestions, please toss them my way.

Bruce,

No, I haven't had the control valve apartyes. One step at a time, I guess. I thought I was getting ready to test the "freespool" pressure (from underneath) but I guess I had already checked it from the test port on the quill. And it read zero. Didn't even blip. Looks like I'm digging into the hoses and control valve.

As far as the hoses, the person I bought it from had numbered each hose and each fitting on the control valve. But who knows? I'll dog deeper and see what I can find out. But to be honest...im pretty sure they're right.

The pressure from the pump will energize the slave cylinder (releasing the brake) then pressurize the clutch circuit fractions of a second after releasing the brake. It is essentially one circuit. Free spool is a valve issue or a slave cylinder issue. If the slave is leaking and oil is present, I would suspect the cylinder, but you have stated your appears normal.

Thanks Bruce. I'm looking into the hoses / valve now. But you said something that caught my attention. You indicated a quick operational reaction. When engaging my winch in, the brake releases quickly but it takes several seconds before the winch starts moving. Is that normal?

Woo hoo! Its working now. Two hoses on the spool valve were switched. Thanks, Bruce. I researched your post from a different thread detailing the hose hookup. Worked like a charm. Also, the winch is responding almost immediately now. No delays.
