450 Straight not pulling on right side under load.

Post by BRich1969 » Tue May 07, 2019 12:55 pm

Hey guys! Newbie here.

I have a 450 straight that recently quit pulling on right side while under load. So, I tore the machine down and put new steering clutches on both sides. I used the correct plates for the 450 straight in doing so. Finally got it all back together and tried it out. Steers great!! However, underload the right side still does not pull going forward nor backwards. If ground is soft it may spin some but not like left side. If ground is hard, it will not spin at all. While I had it torn down, I cleaned both sides well and freed up any linkages that appeared to be stuck. Overall, machine is in great shape except under load.

The old steering clutches didn't look all that bad. However, I put new ones on it since I was that far into it. I also replaced the inner hub on right side because internal splines had noticeable wear. I cleaned the existing pressure plates well and I did not adjust them since I didn't have adjustment gauge.

Thanks in advance for responses.

I'd say you answered your own question...the gauge is a must when you do anything in the final. Whether new or slightly wore it is necessary to set the fingers with the gauge. Probable always have the issues until the correct pressure is on those clutch disks.

i am about 2 hours from crossville near i 75...37756 zip code.

i got to thinking about his pressure and it may be possible to tighten the fingers through the top covers. it would be a chore, but worth a try.

Unless you have a spring tester, how do you know the old pressure plates are good? Visual inspection tells nothing unless there is a major flaw or damage. Gauge is also necessary, yes.
I have the gauges on hand, $50.
