450 Straight Throw Out Bearing

I've finally started in earnest to get this dozer going. It's a 450 straight (s/n TSF3M 0787351). Got the engine out Monday and found that rats or squirrels had been living in the bell housing. The grease tube was gone and the small spring on the throwout bearing carrier was broken. After cleaning everything out I tried moving the throwout bearing but it won't budge. I presume it should slide in and out easily? The bearing won't turn and the carrier won't move. Looks like it is all the way forward. the clutch peddle moves fine, no linkage damaged or broken but it doesn't touch the carrier till the peddle is fully depressed. Should the carrier slide off or is something holding it? (set screw, pin?)

It should slide. Lots of weasel piss and vibration should loosen it up.

I would try to shoot some grease in it...a grease gun hose works great as a replacement hose.

It's a 1/8" fitting so you could just remove the hose tip and attach the threaded fitting, from the grease gun, directly to where the missing hose should go. You could also screw a alemite in there to get it lubed until you make a proper repair.

WD40 and a small amount of heat and it should slide right out.

I've moved the grease fitting from the top of the bell housing to the carrier and greased it but that didn't help. I sprayed it with penetrating oil yesterday. Maybe it will move today.

I recently had a similar issue with a winch bearing...I ended up heating it with a torch.

You could also use a puller or hit it with a hammer. You'll probably be replacing the bearing anyway, so a bit of force wont hurt anything you will be reusing. A little bit of movement in any direction will do the trick.

If you don't get it loose by next week, I can come by and help you. I need to go see my buddy up in your area anyway. Let me know if you need some help.

When I did mine it had quite a metal burr built up on the shaft at the end of forward travel. It might be hanging up on the burr like mine did. It was not stuck but it did catch on release. I would give it a light rap with a hammer if the penetrating oils don't fix the problem. Check to make sure the shaft is smooth before reinstalling. I dressed the burr off with a file.

Got it off. After penetrating oil I used a piece of 2 x 2 square tubing to drive it back then pushed it forward with the clutch pedal, repeated a few times and it finally loosened up enough to slide it off. The bearing is frozen and won't move. Ordered a new one from John Deere. Man, they think a lot of their parts! Now I've got to repair a cracked frame rail, remove lots of broken bolts, check the condition of the clutch, replace the bearing in the water pump, put it back together and hope the drive clutches and brakes are ok. I'm learning a lot about this thing!

Yeah, I had heard that they had gotten high, hadn't checked the number from Deere in a while.
