450 Frame Question

Post by 450FiveString » Wed Jun 05, 2019 7:51 am

I've pulled apart my 450 straight to fix a cracked frame rail. The bolts that attach it to the clutch housing are 1". the top hole in the frame is 1" but the bottom hole is 1-1/2". Should there be a 1-1/2 od x 1 id washer or bushing to take up that gap or is that normal? The frame was broken at the transmission and the top two attaching bolts on the opposite side are broke off at the transmission. Looking at the parts manual I see different bolts and washers but not much detail.Image

I don't remember an oversize washer when I took mine out, but I will look and send you a pic.

If you added the new bushing would it hurt anything? Sounds like it would help with snugness and prevent potential wear in that location.

What is the bushing you're talking about? There was nothing in the 1-1/2 hole except the 1" bolt with about a 2" washer on the outside of the frame. It just seems that something should be in there so the load wouldn't all be on the top bolt.

I'm a machinist and I can make a washer like this. I was just wondering if there was something like this originally?

I agree with that theory. Why would there be an inch bolt in an inch and a half hole?

Not sure if that is what is supposed to be there or not, but the theory is increases surface area on a load bearing bolt. Deere does exactly this on all of the two cylinder crawlers except for the 440 for the side frame to bellhousing bolt.

I'm sure something is missing here. I googled the part no. for the lower bolt and it's over a hundred dollars. It obviously is no ordinary bolt but I'm going to make a stepped washer to put back in there to fill that space.

Mine has thick washers that fit the hole flush with the outside.

That sounds like what mine is missing.

It was great meeting you and your brother yesterday. You are making great progress on your 450, hang in there, that light at the end of the tunnel might not be a train after-all. I am contacting the people on the 450 crawler and loader today, hope to go see them.
Thank a heap.
