Bound up tracks

Post by vthartford » Tue Nov 28, 2006 8:47 pm

The tracks on mt 450C are pretty bound up. It does not stop me from using it by some of the links just do not go back straight when they come around the pulleys. All the pins and sprokets are in great shape. Anyone know a good, preferably easy way to loosen them up.

Hi,

Soak 'em in a puddle of water for a couple days, then drive around for a while.

Water will loosen the rust scale better than anything and then running will drive it out between the pins and bushings.

The bad part is that if you don't then use the machine enough, they'll just set up again. It helps to keep the machine under a shelter with the tracks up off of the ground on boards (or, as I use, small tree trunks), too.

The best I have found if you are in an area that gets it is snow. Snow is very abrasive, plus you get the penetrating benefit of the water. If you have a place to do it, get it in some deep snow and run it for a while, then get on a hard flat surface and run it for a while. You will know you are getting somewhere when the links start to bleed the rust out.

with the tracks a bit more lose than normal . Just put it to work till the track chains get good and loose on a job that dosent take much turning or side hill rideing .Both of these manovers take proper adjusted tracks .I just fixed a 450E that had a couple of siezed track pins so I put it to work in a gravel/sand pit with fine sand for several hours .After I slackened off the tracks and the fine sand tighened them up again .But it loosened up and cleaned up quickly in sand .Digitup.

Apropos of nothing, walking through abrasive snow will put a shine on a pair of black military boots that is the envy of all, least wise it did 40 years ago. Ah, the things we learn from Uncle Sam.
