79 450B steering
My 450B dozer, a 1979, I think. Where is the power steering pump and where do I fill it? My steering is completely out. pulling both or one handle doesn't pause, turn or brake the dozer. It just keeps going in the same direction. I have the hood off and don't see a reservoir or a pump?? Where does the power steering get it's fluid? I took the filter off (located in front of radator) it was dry.
Re: 79 450B steering
In April when you posted I said some had a separate reservoir and a pump on the engine. Others took oil from the reverser/clutch system. If you don't see a pump on the engine and reservoir under the hood, yours is a later one that used the reverser oil.
I also asked if you had Technical manual TM1033. It has info in it for both power steering pressure sources so you can troubleshoot your steering. You are lucky as you can download a free copy of that John Deere manual at https://archive.org/details/John_Deere_Company. It is the third one from the left in the top row when I open that site. Very seldom do you find the OEM manuals for free.
Basic place to start is to see that all oil levels are full with the correct oil in them. You should also get the Operator's manual (OMT40817). It has the lubrication and service info commonly required by operators.
You can check parts at https://jdparts.deere.com/servlet/com.d ... anguage=19. be sure to check for serial number breaks when you look at parts.

Diagnosis, troubleshooting, and all other pertinent info should be in your service manual.

I would think you could steer without the power assist, but I've only operated a 350 B. if they have the same setup then the power assist isn't necessary to steer, but only helps to not have to pull as hard on the sticks.

I think you need to post some pics of what is under your seat. If it’s a 79 then it would be a C model. Easy way to tell if there is a small 2 spool valve body on top of the rear end area vs the hydraulic assist cylinders that a B model would have. Haven’t seen a B model with wet steering clutches yet, but would be a C in every respect except the serial number.
If you have no oil at the filter located behind the grill guard (Transmission), then you need to check your oil level.
