HELP!! Final drive mistake

Post by drewparsons » Sun Jul 28, 2019 3:14 pm

Hey guys, so I wondered why you had to put the clutch on the outer unit, and not just do it the easy way and put it on the dozed first and not fool with the brake band..SO...I put everything put back together except drive wheel and track and I found a snap ring on the track...and realized it was the snap ring for final drive, which in turn hold the clutch drum to outer unit....hence the reason why it has to be all put together..So how much trouble am I in, do I have to tear back down or will it be fine..I plan on selling it.

What model dozer?

Is it the big circlip? The ends are shaped like a "V" as opposed to two little holes like most snap rings.

Either way I would say you need to pull the final back off and put the clip on. It a pain, but totally necessary.

I've rebuilt both sides in my 350 straight. The snap ring you mention holds things together...it'll have to be in place if you want to run the dozer. Otherwise you've wasted your time and money and will most likely damage something else.

Here is a video that might help. The 1.06 mark to be specific.

Yep, lol..I actually watched that video 20 min before deciding it was silly to install the clutch drum on the roemoved unit and a lot easier to just install it on to dozed...once I noticed snap ring I understood why...I just did t wanna have to tear down again :(

That would be a good idea, I never even thought about installing the drum first. If Deere would have designed it this way things would be easier for sure.

I drilled holes in the ends of my snap ring to make it easier to install and remove. That ring is a beast and needs a bit more work to spread it out. The video shows how he adjusted the tips of his removal tool. I tried that but decided drilling holes was a bit easier for me and my situation.

Jason, so I ended up getting 10inch 5/8 bolts, and separating final drive from dozer, I was able to get my small hands in the gap, remove all of the clutches, and get snap ring on, it was hard and ended up holding with one hand and using closed end on a wrench to pull ring open while using other fingers to slip on...but it's done
