If the check valve solves the short term problem, it's not the long term solution.
Why do you think it's not the "long term solution"?

Because more often than not the check valve gets plugged by the breakdown of the pellathane-plastic weight retainer ring. If the check valve blockage is cleared and the source of the plugging is not addressed in number of cases the injector pump failed and some cases the shaft snapped.

It's well documented here and a number of other forums. Mine failed so I rebuilt the pump and replaced the old style with the new the EID style retainer.

I think I have the issue licked!!! After looking at Jim B's diagram, I went to my local JD dealer and purchased the said check valve (now $30) and installed the rather non-impressive part onto my injection pump. I had to make a new fuel line, because the old one did not release the cap, and twisted the line right up. I also blew out the return line from the #4 injector back to the tank, added some fuel, and voila!! I had it idling for an hour without a skip. Although not in operation mode, previously, I could not keep it idling for more than 5-10 minutes!!!

Thank you very much to those who gave me insight on how to troubleshoot the fuel system. You are all a great help!!

Could you see any foreign material stuck in/plugging the check valve?

What I noticed was a fragment of paint, or a chip of paint in the check valve. I wonder if it wouldn't let the membrane from operating properly. Must be from past owners try to replace or perhaps get the machine running, since I purchased it with its inherent running problem, knowing that I would have to work at it to keep it running!!! I may rebuild the pump in the winter months for good measure.

It's sad that a machine that size is rendered disable from a $30.00 part. Good luck rebuilding the pump. If it's your first pump rebuild, pay very close attention to how it's disassembled. There are about 1,000,000 parts in there and they seem to need to be reinstalled properly. I've gotten to the point where I take pics, as I take stuff apart, to help reassembly. Don't laugh, you'll get old too.

Agreed, take a lot of pictures. Just make sure you remember where you stored them if you use your phone. Again, getting old sucks.

Getting old does suck but, I think it's better than the alternative.
