6405 Dozer
6405 Dozer
Does anyone know where the serial number plate is located on a 6405 dozer? Is there a serial number break down by year?
Re: 6405 Dozer
I don't know that they had serial number plates on the dozers of this vintage. The serial number of the crawler ID'd the blade model it left the factory equipped with. I think the crawler serial number was used where a serial number was needed, at least that's the way it looks from reviewing the parts books for the 6405, 450, and 450B. Starting with the C series the blade info is included in the crawler parts catalog, where the 6405 had a separate catalog during the 450 and 450B crawler runs. That's what it looks like to me.

They may have had a plate, but no year related info would be available based on the number even if they did.

Re: 6405 Dozer
Hi,
There was a point in time when they quit sticking serial number plates on the dozer and loader frames. They then added an extra letter into the machine serial number string to indicate what they put on at the factory. Like 350BA and 350CE for example. I think the A meant bare crawler, and the E meant inside mount 6-way PAT.
There have been several discussions over a span of time while we all tried to decode what the extra letter meant....

Stan,
In the on line parts catalog for most models they have an introduction section below the parts section. There is usually a serial number breakdown which gives the meaning of each part of the complete number, including those letters. They don't breakdown the unit serial number to build year, but the posts in the FAQ section do that. It looks like starting with the 350C and 450C they started including the bulldozer blades in the parts books with the crawler. The straights and B models had separate blade catalogs from what I see.

Re: 6405 Dozer
The reason I was asking is while in the process of changing hyd filters the catalog lists a long and short filter with a ser # break. Mine has the long one (9 1/2 in I think) but didn't have the spring nd spacer on the bolt. I just wondered if this is correct. The bolt tightend the filter up snug and didn't collaps the end cap, so I suppose it's correct.
Re: 6405 Dozer
If you look at the filter in the 450 crawler parts book it shows the year of the break. The short filter shows as: - 1965. The long filter shows as: 1965 -. The bolt is longer and the spacer and spring are not used with the long filter, which is shown the same in both parts catalogs, along with differences in a few of the other parts holding the filters. The parts catalog of the 6405 shows the break as: - 0600 for the short filter. The long filter is 0601 -. The drawing number in the lower left is the same on both, just the description of the serial/year break is different in the two catalogs. I would say yours is correct based on the parts catalogs and your description.
